Leadership in Community: Helping the people find their voice in the liturgy
January 22-25, 9am - 5pm, St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church, San Francisco

Being invested with leadership means more than being “in charge.” It is a sacramental sign of God’s work in community, and it is principally one of sharing responsibility and encouraging the people’s discovery of their authority in God.

Leadership in Community looks at how we as leaders actually give people voice in liturgy and make responsive listening a part of leadership. This four-day intensive workshop will look at foundational areas of liturgical leadership:

• The body’s language — Improving ritual movement, posture, voice, touch, and eye-contact
• The “Power Points” — Discovering the acoustic, visual, and symbolic power points of a building
• A relational congregation — Teaching people to sing from the heart, to be silent together, and to share and pray out loud.
• Improvisational liturgical skills — Using improvisational prayer and preaching; rehearsing music by ear; building liturgy from scratch.

The conference is meant for anyone who leads in worship: presiders, deacons, music directors, and lay leaders. It will be an interactive mixture of presentation and small group practicum. At the end of the conference, participants will return to their congregations with practical tools for immediate application in any liturgical context. More importantly, they will return with a new sense of their authority and, more importantly, how to share that authority with confidence and joy.

The conference team is still in development and will consist of lay leaders, clergy, and music directors, and will be led by The Rev. Donald Shell, founding rector of St. Gregory of Nyssa church and now Consultant and Creative Director of All Saints Company.

You can register online after November 1 at www.allsaintscompany.org or you can pre-register immediately by email at info@allsaintscompany.org. The conference size will be limited and early registration is strongly suggested. Preference will be given both to those registering early and to those attending the conference for the full time.

Cost: $350 registration, which includes lunch each day and all materials (scholarship may be available)
